Sedation Dentistry

Nervous about your dental visit? Dr. Patel Dentistry offers sedation options to help anxious patients relax and receive the care they need comfortably.

Overview

Understanding Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry uses medication to help patients relax during dental procedures. It is available for patients who experience dental anxiety, have a sensitive gag reflex, need lengthy or complex procedures, or simply want a more comfortable experience.

Options range from mild nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to moderate oral sedation, allowing the level of relaxation to be matched to each patient's needs. Patients remain conscious and able to communicate throughout. Sedation simply removes the anxiety and discomfort from the experience.

Why It Matters

Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

Dramatically reduces dental anxiety and fear

Multiple procedures can be completed in one appointment

Reduces sensitivity to gagging throughout treatment

Patients remain cooperative during longer appointments

Little to no memory of the procedure for some patients

Suitable for patients with physical or cognitive challenges

Good to Know

How each sedation option works

Nitrous oxide, often called laughing gas, is a mild sedative you breathe in through a small hood that sits over your nose. It takes effect within minutes, keeps you relaxed but fully awake and able to talk to us, and lifts quickly once the hood is removed. Because recovery is fast, most patients drive themselves home afterwards.

Oral sedation is taken as a pill before your appointment. It produces a deeper sense of calm that lasts for several hours, and many patients remember very little of the procedure afterwards. Because the effect persists after you leave, you will need to arrange for someone to drive you home.

Which option suits you depends on your level of anxiety and the length of the appointment. We go through both with you before anything is decided.

If dental anxiety has kept you away

Plenty of our patients have gone years without seeing a dentist because of a bad experience in the past. There is no lecture waiting for you here. Tell us what you are worried about when you book, and we will talk through your comfort options before any treatment begins, at whatever pace works for you.

Common Questions

Sedation Dentistry FAQ

Will I need a driver after sedation?

For oral sedation, yes. Arrange a ride home as the effects can persist for several hours. Nitrous oxide wears off quickly and most patients can drive themselves home.

Is sedation dentistry safe?

Yes, when administered by a trained dental professional. We review your complete medical history and current medications before recommending any sedation option.

Can children receive sedation?

Nitrous oxide is safe and commonly used for children who are anxious or require longer procedures. We assess each child individually and discuss all options with parents.
